Truck Driver Medical Exam Results Going Digital

Effective June 23, 2025, Certified Medical Examiners (MEs) will be required to submit all commercial vehicle driver medical exam results directly to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration by midnight of the calendar day following the exam. FMCSA will then electronically transmit driver identification, examination results, restriction information, and medical variance information to State Driver Licensing Agencies or Departments of Motor Vehicles (SDLAs or DMVs).

This change applies to both holders of commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) and commercial learner’s permits (CLPs).

Drivers will no longer need to physically carry a paper copy of their Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC) to their state licensing agency to demonstrate that they meet medical qualifications to operate a commercial motor vehicle. Until the full implementation of this change, drivers are wise to continue having the paper copy available.

FMCSA is streamlining and enhancing the security of many tasks motor carriers and truck drivers must complete to legally operate. That includes the ongoing modernization of FMCSA’s online registration system (https://www.prepassalliance.org/fmcsa-updating-online-registration-system/), implementing multifactor identification (https://prepass.com/blog/act-now-access-to-your-fmcsa-accounts-is-changing/), and helping carriers identify fraud (https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/fraud-alerts).

The digitization of medical exam results should reduce the delays and human errors inherent in paperwork. Law enforcement will also have online access to the most current medical qualification data, helping safe, legal and medically qualified truck drivers continue on their way quickly.
