Since June 2023, employers may choose to use oral fluids testing for drugs and alcohol. Oral fluids testing is a practical solution for roadside, post-crash and reasonable suspicion tests of truck drivers where timely access to a facility for collection of a urine sample may not be possible.
Now the U.S. Department of Transportation has added procedures for the training of mock oral fluid collectors (trainees) and has limited who may be present when oral fluids are collected. Effective December 5, 2024, only the collector, the employee, or a DOT agency representative may actually witness the testing process.
